Following their 2010 no deforestation commitment, Nestlé has announced that 77% of its agricultural commodities are confirmed as being deforestation-free.
Nestlé has cited that the use of its satellite imagery system, Starling, has been highly beneficial in the monitoring and managing of its entire palm oil supply chain.
The company has noted that transparency is crucial to building effective, sustainable supply chains Nestlé has gone further in this respect by publishing a Transparency Dashboard to use information provided through Starling on deforestation trends from the mills it sources from.
Magdi Batato, executive vice president and head of operations for Nestlé S.A., said: “Innovation and technology like Starling is accelerating our journey towards zero deforestation.
“This is transforming the way we manage deforestation risks in our palm oil supply chain – we are using this tool to hold our suppliers and ourselves accountable. We are satisfied with our progress, but there is much more to do. The last miles to go are always the hardest.”
Satellite monitoring has been used across the entire supply chain in a move towards entire public transparency for Nestlé’s customer and consumer base. Other tools used by the company include certification, supply chain managing, and on-the-ground verification.
Nestlé has also worked alongside partners such as Airbus and Earthworm Foundation to reach this achievement, and has called for ‘urgent collaboration’ between other consumer goods companies to work towards a more sustainable future for the industry.
