Duvel Moortgat has launched a 40% ABV spirit created using part of the basic brew for regular Duvel beer.
Called Duvel Distilled, the beverage is aged for ten years in a combination of whiskey and sherry barrels to impart a “subtle vanilla touch”.
“We are fascinated by different brewing techniques, but also by distillation and ageing,” said Hedwig Neven, brewmaster at Duvel Moortgat.
“We distilled the basic brew for Duvel into a strong alcoholic beverage. Then we filtered the distillate and let it mature for years in oak bourbon and sherry barrels.
“This autumn, we are launching Duvel Distilled, which has been aged in barrels for ten years. Some things are worth the wait.”
According to Duvel Moortgat, the spirit pairs well with grilled fish and meat, seasonal vegetables such as artichokes and Brussels sprouts, or fruit such as mangoes, peaches and bananas.
Limited-edition Duvel Distilled is now available in China, the Netherlands and Belgium with a recommended retail price of €49.95.
Last year, Duvel Moortgat acquired a 60% stake in UK-based kombucha producer Jarr Kombucha.
