Danone has announced that four of its brands in its water division have committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions in the coming years, in a move to accelerate its journey towards its 2050 target.
The four major brands include Evian, Lanjarón, Volvic and Font Vella, who have pledged to reach zero emission by 2020, 2025, 2025 and 2030 respectively.
The promises were announced during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP25) in Madrid, which saw three more Danone subsidiaries sign the B-Lab pledge to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gases and reach net zero emissions by 2030.
Aguas Danone Spain, Danone Waters Germany and Danone Waters of America are the three subsidiaries who took part.
In 2015, the French corporation committed to becoming carbon neutral across its full-value chain by 2050, with a 50% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030.
Danone was approved by the Science-Based Targets initiative in 2017 and earlier this year in September, the company joined 86 other global companies in signing the Global Compact’s Business Ambition for the 1.5°C pledge.
Danone’s chairman and CEO Emmanuel Faber said: “I welcome and warmly support B-Lab’s leadership in responding to the climate emergency. With the signature of this pledge, Danone is now building further on the pioneering commitments from brands like evian in the US and Germany; Lanjarón, Font Vella in Spain and Volvic in Germany, to reach net zero carbon emission. And we will not stop there.
“In line with our ‘One Planet. One Health’ ambition, we will continue to work individually and collectively to drive an industry-wide transition to a low-carbon economy. It is our most important responsibility, to help prepare a sustainable future for the next generation, and the ones that will follow.”
