Ingredients and distillery products firm, MGP Ingredients, has expanded its textured protein offering with the addition of a gluten-free textured pea option.
MGP’s latest innovation will join established textured wheat options as part of the company’s newly-renamed ProTerra line of plant-based proteins.
ProTerra is designed for use in vegan and vegetarian applications, as well as in blended products as a partial substitute for meat. It can also be used in clean or simple label products as, according to MGP, it is produced from non-GMO sources.
MGP claims its textured plant protein has significant functional benefits, such as good hydration capacity and that it contains 75% protein on a dry basis.
“ProTerra proteins not only mimic the appearance and fibrous texture of meat, but their enhanced texture and mouthfeel are important attributes in products developed for consumers who desire the sensory attributes of meat in a plant-based option,” said Ody Maningat, MGP’s chief science officer and vice president of R&D.
Michael Buttshaw, vice president of ingredients sales, marketing and R&D at MGP, added: “With the addition of our new gluten-free pea products, food formulators can count on yet another quality textured plant protein from MGP.
“Our expertise in textured proteins from plant-based sources has supported the development of many successful products on the market today and we look forward to being part of more.”
