Wessanen UK has expanded its Kallø portfolio with the introduction of new protein-packed veggie cakes in two flavours.
The UK brand, which is known for its rice and corn cakes, has replaced the typical ingredient with lentils and pea proteins.
Kallø’s vegetable-based alternative range is initially available in two flavours: Beetroot and Spinach & Pesto.
As part of Kallø’s commitment to healthier snacking and offering plant-based alternatives, the new veggies cakes are low in fat and calories, high in protein and fibre and made with 100% natural ingredients.
As a serving suggestion, Kallø says the Spinach & Pesto Veggie Cakes can be topped with fresh pesto and a light sprinkling of pine nuts, or the Beetroot Veggie Cakes with beetroot, humus, feta and dill.
According to a survey, Kallø found that 45% of customers would consider consuming the veggie cakes with no topping, which is three times more in comparison to rice cakes, due to its stronger flavour profile.
“This is the first time Kallo has taken the rice out of a rice cake to create a new and innovative snack option,” said Bryan Martins, marketing and category director at Wessanen UK.
Martins added: “The 122g packs are perfect to suit at-home snacking or light lunch options, and the delicious flavours make it ideal for attracting new consumers into the category. Our consumer feedback at trial phase was incredibly positive and we’re confident they will have strong appeal.”
With its range of lentil and pea veggie cakes, Kallø intends to help introduce new and younger consumers to the category and appeal to those looking to diversify their snacking choices.
Kallø’s new vegan and gluten-free snacks will be available from May at Waitrose and Sainsbury’s and Ocado and other specialist retailers from June for an RRP of £2.49 per pack.
