TreeHouse Foods has announced its sustainable achievements to date and outlined its environmental, social and governance goals for the next four years.
In 2016, TreeHouse set out environmental sustainability goals for its North America manufacturing operations focusing on energy intensity, water intensity and waste contribution to landfill.
Published in its 2020 Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) Report, the company says it has decreased its carbon dioxide emissions by 21% from 2016 to 2019.
Meanwhile, the water intensity across all its facilities – except one – fell by 6% during the same period. TreeHouse’s landfill diversion rate rose from 59% in 2016 to 78% in 2019.
The private label food manufacturer has set new goals for 2025, identifying five key areas of focus: ESG integration, transparency and disclosure, supply chain and operations, employee engagement and welfare, and plastics and packaging.
As part of its Agenda 2025, TreeHouse aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5%, water intensity by 10% and achieve a company-wide landfill diversion rate of 85%. It also looks to reduce its food loss waste from plant operations by 50% by 2030.
The company says it will develop a responsible sourcing programme and create programmes that elevate the importance of diversity and inclusion, as well as the safety, wellbeing and environmental health of its employees. It has also committed to the development of sustainable packaging options that are recyclable, recycled and compostable.
Steve Oakland, CEO and president of TreeHouse Foods, said: “The events of this year, from the Covid-19 pandemic to global protests against racial injustice to the growing threat of climate change, have all underscored the need for companies like TreeHouse Foods, Inc. to be an example of what is possible.
“We must leverage our scale, capabilities, and influence to help address these complex social and environmental challenges.”
Earlier this year, the company announced plans to reorganise its structure from three divisions to two, in a move to optimise its business.
