The combined company is the result of a merger between Dow and DuPont, which completed in August 2017. E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, commonly referred to as DuPont, was founded in July 1802 as a gunpowder mill by Éleuthère Irénée du Pont; while Dow Chemical was founded in 1897 by chemist Herbert Henry Dow, who invented a new method of extracting the bromine that was trapped underground in brine at Midland, Michigan.

In January 2011, DuPont announced that it had reached a definitive agreement to buy Danisco for $6.3 billion. In May 2012, the company announced that it had acquired from Bunge full ownership of the Solae joint venture, a soy-based ingredients company. The merger between it and Dow was announced in December 2015.
