Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) has committed to reduce its absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 25% and its energy intensity by 15% by 2035, as part of its new advanced sustainability targets.
The announcement follows on from ADM’s original “15×20” plan, unveiled in 2011, which set per-unit improvements in terms of energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, water, and waste to landfill to be achieved by 2020.
Since meeting these objectives ahead of schedule, ADM has set new sustainability goals with the support of management firm WSP Global.
Through its survey, WSP Global identified several pathways towards success including purchasing renewable electricity, increasing use of biomass fuels, transportation fleet changes and equipment changes in some locations.
As part of its movement towards sustainability, ADM formed a new committee on Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility last year and is increasingly using technology to map its supply chains.
Chairman and CEO Juan Luciano said: “…we believe it remains vitally important that we continue to plan for the future and remain good long-term stewards of our company and our planet.
“We know that the health of our natural resources are critical to our future. Consumers around the world know it as well, and they are making it clear that they expect their food and drink to come from sustainable ingredients, produced by companies that share their values.”
Earlier this year, ADM announced plans to expand the production capacity of non-GMO soy protein concentrate at its factory in Europoort, the Netherlands, as it aims to meet the growing demand for plant-based proteins.
