ADM to expand production of plant-based protein at Dutch site

ADM is expanding the production capacity of non-GMO soy protein concentrate at its factory in Europoort, the Netherlands, as it aims to meet the growing demand for plant-based proteins.

The Europoort production site recently started producing soy protein concentrate, which is available in a powdered format and can be used in a variety of food applications.

ADM claims that this production expansion will help the company address the growing demand for plant-based proteins, particularly those looking for ingredients which are GMO-free.

While the number of consumers following a vegetarian or fully plant-based diet has been rising, another notable consumer trend has been the increased number of ‘flexitarians’, who still consume meat or animal products, but are seeking to cut down on the consumption of animal products for ethical, health or environmental purposes.

George Perujo, product management EMEAI, ADM Human Nutrition, said: “With more consumers adopting a flexitarian diet, the need for plant-based solutions continues to grow in Europe.

“And besides being conscious about sourcing, Europeans are more likely to pay attention to the non-GMO status of their ingredients, so European origination and production was an important factor when we were considering options for this expansion.

“The Europoort facility has long-standing technological capabilities as well as a proven track record in the production of soy protein concentrate, so it was the ideal choice for this expansion.”

The plant-based protein market is a key strategic area for ADM, and this latest move follows the acquisition of plant-based extracts and ingredients manufacturer Yerbalatina last month.

According to ADM, the acquisition of Yerbalatina expanded ADM’s plant-based business in Brazil, adding an alternative protein production facility in Campo Grande.

This followed the collaboration between ADM and Brazilian meat firm Marfrig, which saw the two companies agree to begin the production of plant-based protein products for the Brazilian market, such as plant-based burgers.
