Cargill has launched a new waxy corn sustainability programme in Europe to ensure a long-term sustainable crop supply for food starch production.
The Waxy Corn Promise will see Cargill source waxy corn 100% sustainably from European farmers, and the programme will aim to address key sustainability challenges in Europe’s waxy corn growing regions.
Cargill says that the programme will achieve this through the protection of biodiversity, soil and water quality preservation and the optimisation of water use on farms, and action plans will be implemented and reviewed every year.
Dawn Emerson, Cargill sustainability manager said: “The Waxy Corn Promise was developed with the support of our agricultural crop suppliers and an agronomy consultancy, to ensure that we make real sustainability impact.
“It is tailored specifically to the waxy corn crop and the growing regions, recognising the good work that farmers do already and providing improvement actions to help them become more sustainable year-on-year”.
