Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) aims to increase the use of recycled materials in the creation of its bottles through a new 100% recycled PET (rPET) deal with Loop Industries.
CCEP expects to be using Loop rPET in its product packaging by early 2020.
Loop Industries said that as the demand for sustainable packaging solutions continues to grow, it has emerged with “transformational technology” that allows no- and low-value plastics to be diverted, recovered and recycled endlessly into new plastic.
The technology allows for the creation of plastic bottles and packaging of any colour, transparency or condition to be converted into food grade packaging which meets FDA requirements.
The PET for CCEP will be sourced from Loop’s joint venture facility in the US with Indorama Ventures.
Ron Lewis, CCEP chief supply chain officer, said: “This is an important investment as it directly supports our sustainability action plan, This is Forward. As part of This is Forward, we’ve committed to ensuring that at least 50% of the material we use for our PET bottles comes from recycled plastic by 2025. This is part of a holistic strategy focused on creating a more circular packaging economy.”
Loop Industries founder and CEO Daniel Solomita added: “We are very proud to become a supplier of Loop branded PET resin to the members of the Coca-Cola system’s Cross Enterprise Procurement Group.
“We are especially pleased to be able to assist Coca-Cola’s authorised bottlers as they work to meet their recycled content ambitions.”
So far this year, Loop Industries has also signed agreements with PepsiCo and Danone-owned Evian.
