Cosucra has announced that it will open a new pea processing plant in Aarhus, Denmark, as the company seeks to strengthen its position in the growing plant-based food market.
This new facility will be the company’s second pea processing facility, and will be jointly operated by Cosucra and the facility’s current owner AABT.
The plant formerly operated as a soybean processing plant, but Cosucra will renovate and upgrade the facility to enable the production of pea-based products.
According to Cosucra, the company will aim to minimise the environmental impact of the facility by sourcing peas from the Baltic region, while the facility will be partially powered by biogas to reduce CO2 emissions in the production process.
The development of the new plant forms part of a €60 million investment programme to support the company’s growth in the pea protein and chicory sectors.
As part of this strategy, the company invested €35 million to upgrade its pea processing plant in Warcoing, Belgium last year, with the company estimating that the enhanced facility would double its production capacity of pea protein ingredients.
