Free From Functional & Health Ingredients 2019, Europe’s leading platform for the free from industry, will showcase the latest product developments when they reveal the shortlisted nominees for Product of the Year Award 2019. Visitors to this year’s exhibition, at Gran Via Fira de Barcelona on 28-29 May, can see the world’s pioneering brands that are shaping the market for organic, vegan, and functional foods and ingredients.
Products include clean label ingredient solutions for the bakery sector including starches, flours, fibres and proteins from returning exhibitors Ulrick & Short. It also focuses on tackling sugar reduction with high quality alternative ingredients for the bakery sector. Emma Walker, R&D Technologist comments: “Allergen claims are here to stay as the trend has grown and the number of people following a ‘free from’ lifestyle has increased.”
Also reflecting this trend, Dietary Food Solutions will showcase gluten free, raw ingredients and baking mixes. They will be joined by industry leaders, MartinoRossi SpA specialising in the production of gluten free, allergen free and GMO-free ingredients including cereals, pulses and superfoods.
Free from snacking and confectionery is a growing sector. Bandama will launch a new mini cookie line made with sunflower oil, chia seeds, quinoa, oat fibre and natural fruit, free from milk, eggs and nuts, offering a high quality snacking alternative with less than 4% sugars. Protein has become a bigger part of snacking, reflected by brands including Frusano who is launching five new products including an Organic Protein Snack with Curry Spice and Organic Protein Bar Chai-Latte.
Growing innovation in vegetable-based snacks will be represented by Botanic & Fruits, who is launching dehydrated, low calorie, oil free, no added sugars or additives, artichoke, mushroom and asparagus snacks. Tying into this is the reduced sugar trend, International Taste Solutions will be showcasing its solutions for healthier reduced-sugar options, covering drinks, snacks and baked goods, including a Clean Label vegetable fibre which replaces the functional properties of sugar, while drastically reducing the calorie content.
The ever-growing vegan sector will be represented by long-standing industry leaders and start-ups and will see the launch of a new organic, lactose free, Fairtrade chocolate from Plamil and a vegan honey alternative from De Smaakspecialist. This innovative alternative is made with apple juice concentrate, tapioca syrup and lemon juice, and is free from refined sugars and artificial additives.
Reflecting the demand for high quality, protein rich meat alternatives, the show will be the launch pad for innovative protein rich meat alternatives including an 100% vegetable, soya-free, gluten-free, lactose-free, GMO-free, cholesterol-free and allergen-free meat analogue from Ctic Cita. They will be joined by Foods for Tomorrow launching a nutritionally dense soy, legume, high fibre, protein, gluten free, low sugar, cholesterol and saturated fat meat alternative.
