The Greenland government minister for industry Ove-Karl Berthelsen, Destination Avannaa, local premium water producers and Dr Michael Mascha from FineWaters attended the recent Greenland Premium Waters Workshop. The event was initiated by Destination Avannaa to discuss the current status and future potential of premium waters sourced from Greenland.
One of the outcomes of the discussions was for the participants to call for the creation and legal establishment of a controlled origin designation label for all Greenlandic water products within 12 month.
The creation of a controlled origin designation (similar to the Appelation d´Origine Controlée for wine) will help protect and promote Greenlandic Waters as a valuable ressource. The controlled origin designation will cover all sources of water but especially iceberg water which has recently become an innovative new product in the premium bottled water category. Brands such as Illuliaq and Greenland Ice Water’s Qanik are making a splash on the world stage and the Controlled Origin Designation will give consumers confidence and the domestic producers protection from competition trying to associate their product with Greenland without being actually produced and/or sourced in Greenland.
Greenland is on the forefront of using its vast resources in a responsible way and a controlled origin designation will be a pioneering effort and the first of its kind for premium bottled water in the world.
“As the minister of industry and labour, I see a need for innovative thinking – in order to create new business opportunities and jobs”, said Ove Karl Berthelsen. “Having fantastic natural resources as our pristine ice and water, it is obvious to me that the government should emphasise the utilisation of this resource. “?
