US start-up GrowlerWerks aims to let consumers enjoy nitro-infused cold brew coffee from the convenience of their own homes with its new coffee maker.
Portland-based GrowlerWerks said that in order to enjoy the benefits of nitro-infusion, consumers currently need to get it on tap at a coffee shop or buy a can from a grocery store – which can be inconvenient and expensive.
The firm’s uKeg Nitro device uses patented technology to produce nitro-infused cold brew coffee “for as little as $1.50 per pint”.
“Coffee drinkers are very ritualistic, and many prefer to enjoy their morning pick-me-up at home,” said Shawn Huff, GrowlerWerks founder and president.
“We knew we could take our combined 47 years of engineering and product design experience to give people the complete nitro cold brew experience without having to leave the house.”
Cold brew can be made in the uKeg Nitro in 12-24 hours using biodegradable brew bags. When it comes to dispensing, the product uses a nitro-style tap and nitro gas cartridges to achieve a pour with a cascading effect.
The vessel’s pressurisation system keeps cold brew fresh for two weeks, and the vacuum insulated stainless steel keeps coffee cold all day, GrowlerWerks said.
The company has partnered with Seattle-based coffee roaster Caffè Umbria to trial the product.
“We’ve tested the uKeg Nitro in our lab and love how it delivers Caffè Umbria cold brew coffee,” said Marie Franklin, Caffè Umbria director of coffee and education.
“The fact that you can brew and serve from the same device is convenient for any kitchen, and most importantly, the coffee tastes great.”
Founded in 2013, GrowlerWerks also makes the uKeg pressurised growler, which is said to allow beer drinkers to keep their favourite beverage fresh and carbonated for weeks. The uKeg is distributed in the US, Canada, Australia and Europe.
