Unilever-owned Hellmann’s has announced that its mayonnaise bottles and jars sold in Canada will be made from 100% recycled plastic by March 2020.
The commitment to use post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR) in all its mayonnaise bottles and jars across Canada will reportedly save one million kg of virgin plastic this year.
Using PCR plastic will result in a lower carbon footprint and is less reliant on non-renewable natural resources, helping contribute to a sustainable circular economy for plastics, says Hellmann’s.
The project contributes to Unilever’s existing commitment to ensure all its plastic packaging is fully reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 – and to use at least 25% recycled plastic in its packaging, also by 2025.
As a result of converting to PCR plastic jars and bottles, Hellmann’s packaging will have a slightly darker tint compared to previous packaging.
The new packaging will also feature the How2Recycle label which will provide clear instructions on how to recycle correctly.
“Canadians want to do what’s right, seeking out products and brands that prioritise the planet,” said Gary Wade, president of Unilever Canada.
Wade added: “By transitioning our bottles and jars to ones made with 100% recycled plastic, Hellmann’s is helping make sustainable choices more accessible, while continuing to deliver the great taste Canadians know and love.”
Earlier last year, Hellmann’s announced that by 2020, all of its mayonnaise and mayonnaise dressing plastic containers sold in the US will be made from recycled plastic materials.
