There is an ongoing drive for more sustainable packaging materials – this is evident in the ice cream category where one clear trend is the move towards sustainably sourced materials that are fit for recycling. To meet this demand, Huhtamaki has launched a first-to-market ice cream packaging solution in the US, made with 95% renewable biobased material.
The reduction of plastic by moving to paper-based packaging formats – coupled with more sustainable barriers – is one example of such alternative material use. However, it is crucial that packaging functionality, such as structural integrity and properties in frozen supply chains, are not compromised. With new innovations and attention to factors like chill and condensation resistance, paper-based materials can provide viable alternatives to plastic.
To answer to rising trends, Huhtamaki, a key global provider of sustainable packaging solutions, has launched ICON® packaging, a breakthrough paper technology, for use for ice cream containers and lids, which enables recycling of both in communities with paper product recycling programs across the United States.
This is a significant breakthrough in delivering a sustainable solution for consumers which combines Huhtamaki’s proprietary water-based barrier coating with SFI-certified paperboard and which results in the entire package being made with 95% renewable biobased material. This enables the ice cream containers and lids to be recycled along with other paper products such as folded carton packaging in North America.
Kevin Gunning, senior vice president – consumer goods at Huhtamaki North America, said: “ICON® packaging is also an example of Connected Packaging, with a QR code integrated into the packaging design that directs consumers to the Icon landing page, to help inform and increase understanding on the sustainability benefits. This includes how we use responsibly sourced paper board, design packaging for circularity, harness ground-breaking technology, and take practical steps to ensure that we regenerate value through recycling.”
He added: “Connected Packaging is part of Huhtamaki’s digitalisation strategy to provide a communication and marketing platform for customers, to support consumer education and enable improved waste management through increased recycling”.
Use of paper in ice cream packaging solutions presents new opportunities for producers. In addition to the benefits of renewable raw materials, paper-based packaging can also offer better options for the decoration and shape of the packaging.
This is a particularly important differentiator in the highly competitive FMCG market. Paper-based ice cream and dessert packaging offer new possibilities, such as full-cover printing options. ICON® packaging has been developed through comprehensive expertise in barrier functionality, paper forming and printing to drive differentiation and deliver game-changing sustainable food packaging to customers.
