US ingredient company BioCell Technology has presented its “innovative” BioCell Collagen product, which is said to improve joint mobility and boost skin health.
The ingredient, which is available in both pills and tablets, is increasingly being used in foods to provide a functional benefit for consumers.
Douglas Jones, sales and marketing manager of BioCell Technology, told Jules Scully at Vitafoods Asia 2018 how the company developed the product and how it can improve consumers’ health.
He said: “Our flagship ingredient is BioCell Collagen, it is a fairly unique and rare product in that we source our raw ingredient from the cartilage in the chicken sternum, it’s the only part of the chicken that we use, and naturally occurring in the matrix is type II collagen, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate.
“We manufacture our ingredient in both North America and in Germany and sell it to probably over 100 different companies globally. The delivery forms that it’s available both are in both pills and tablets, but then also we’re seeing, particularly in functional foods, a number of companies that are using BioCell in different delivery forms that are appropriate for consumers in their markets, whether it be a chew or a bar; it’s one of the cutting areas in terms of delivery forms that we’re seeing.”
BioCell Technology has conducted a “significant amount of clinical research” on its ingredient, which is said to provide essential nutrients for improving and maintaining healthy joints.
Speaking of the benefits in terms of skin care, Jones said: “We have clinical data using 1g per day where you’re seeing a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, redness and skin dryness. The interesting thing that we’ve seen in our clinicals regarding BioCell is that it actually stimulates the production of type I and type III collagens in the body, so you’re seeing an overall increase in appearance in the skin. In terms of global trends, that’s one of the areas where we’re seeing a lot of interest and actually growth.”
