Lesaffre Human Care aims to respond to a consumer demand for products which boost their immune systems through its LifeinU bacillus subtilis CU1 (BSCU1) probiotic.
The product, which can be used alone or in combination with other ingredients, can deliver its benefits though a range of dietary supplements – such as capsules, tablets and sachets – as well as through functional foods.
Charlotte Troise, APAC scientific manager at Lesaffre Human Care, told FoodBev’s Jules Scully at Vitafoods Asia 2018 how the company is looking at new ways of incorporating the ingredient into foods.
“This bacteria probiotic is a patented strain that Lesaffre is owning,” she said. “We have undertaken a clinical trial in the adult population where we can see that the probiotic will actually enhance the immune system.
“The main benefit will be on immunity… If you incorporate the probiotic in functional food then it will enhance your immune system, so you can take it as a preventive product.”
Lesaffre Human Care showcased BSCU1 as an ingredient within chocolate, but the company is also working with clients that are looking to incorporate it in cereal bars or muesli.
Troise added: “This ingredient is very stable so it resists high temperature as well as humidity, which is always a challenge with a bacteria probiotic.”
