At Hannover Messe 2019, FoodBev’s Alex Clere spoke with Johan Nilsson – VP industry 4.0 and digitalisation for Tetra Pak – about how the carton manufacturer is helping its customers to embrace digital technology and putting more power in the hands of the consumer.
The company was exhibiting its ‘connected packaging’ platform, which will provide consumers with a wealth of information at their fingertips – from where the product was made and where the ingredients came from to where the package can be recycled. For producers, the concept turns cartons into full-scale data carriers and digital toolkits, allowing brands to strive towards greater end-to-end traceability.
Tetra Pak also debuted its factory of the future concept and announced an energy partnership with robotics company ABB.
At Hannover Messe, Tetra Pak was featured as part of the Swedish pavilion; every year, the major technology show in the heart of Germany promotes a ‘sponsor country’, and this year was Sweden’s turn. Tetra Pak has partnered with other Swedish technology and packaging companies – like Stora Enso, BillerudKorsnäs, Ericsson and Electrolux – to increase uptake of digitalisation among brands and consumers.
Nilsson explains: “What we are doing with the Sweden Co-Lab [shows] we don’t believe that we can solve all these problems alone. We will join forces with both large companies and small companies to provide better solutions to the food and beverage industry. That is our ambition and the plan ahead.”
