Lassonde Industries has collaborated with Tetra Pak to release Oasis juice cartons with paper straws as part of a market test aimed at introducing a replacement solution for plastic straws.
The first edition of the 200ml Oasis apple juice carton is now available at select locations in Quebec. Both the paper straw and carton are recyclable.
“In the past few months, we have committed to finding sustainable solutions for making our containers more eco-responsible,” said Jean Gattuso, chief operating officer, Lassonde Industries.
“This initiative is a first step in that direction. Lassonde is the first North American juice manufacturer to test paper straws for this type of container, a food packaging innovation.”
Tetra Pak announced in July it had developed the new paper straw that can be used with its cartons.
The packaging company said it intends to publish and share its innovations on paper straw developments to support industrial collaboration on the alternatives to single-use plastic straws for beverage cartons.
By 2025, Lassonde wants to find solutions for replacing plastic straws and introduce 20% post-consumer recycled content in its packaging and 100% recyclable packaging for all its products.
Last month, Lassonde entered an agreement to acquire Canadian snack and beverage manufacturer Sun-Rype.
