Finnish manufacturer Metsä Board has released a new eco-barrier paperboard suitable for food and food service packaging, to meet the needs of consumers and brands in search of sustainable alternatives.
MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB is free-from plastic and according to local recycling schemes, can be recycled in paper or paperboard waste streams. As an alternative to plastic packaging, Metsä Board is focused on providing consumers with an easy and cost-efficient way of recycling.
While lightweight, the new product is protective and strong with a medium barrier against moisture and grease. Made from pure fresh fibres that are sustainably sourced, with no fluorochemicals or optical brighteners, MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB is safe for direct food contact.
Katja Tuomola, business development director of Metsä Board, part of Metsä Grop said: “Paperboard packaging made from renewable materials is a sustainable choice, and with further development of the barrier properties of the paperboard we are now able to cater for a greater number of applications.
“Our new plastic-free eco-barrier paperboard provides many interesting opportunities for food and food service packaging as well as other end uses where barrier properties are needed.”
The new product is both PEFC and FSC certified and is Metsä Board’s latest release of alternative barrier packaging that is developed sustainably.
