Parabel, the US-based ingredient producer, has secured a Canadian distribution agreement with CK Ingredients for its Lentein plant protein.
Canada’s CK will distribute the full range of Lentein ingredients into the nutraceutical sector and will add expertise in areas such as application development, regulatory, logistics and traceability.
Last August, Parabel received a GRAS (generally recognised as safe) no objections letter from the US Food and Drug Administration for Lentein. It then went on to secure a distribution deal with Stauber USA, which will commercialise the ingredient in the US.
Florida-based Parabel said Lentein “solves supply issues for the food industry looking for healthy and sustainable alternatives to conventional ingredients”.
Lentein is derived from lemnoideae – which is also known as duckweed – and can go from farm to table in 20 minutes.
Habbo de Vaere, vice president of global sales at Parabel, said: “CK are the perfect match for us. They are established in Canada where Lentein just received full regulatory approval and they serve the industries Parabel is operating in.
Michael Chernyak, president of CK Ingredients, added: “Parabel’s innovative Lentein plant protein perfectly complements our existing raw material portfolio. In today’s marketplace, novel plant protein sources are experiencing strong demand and our clients are always looking for ways to differentiate themselves on-shelf and online. The timing of this partnership with Parabel could not be better.”
Parabel is currently constructing its second facility in Vero Beach, Florida, which is expected to be up and running by June and be capable of producing up to 3,500 tons of protein per year.
