‘The Group’s performance in the third quarter has been good, continuing the progress reported in the first half. Sales continued to grow well ahead of the market, reflecting good like-for-like growth and the contribution from the 37 stores opened so far this year.’
In the 13 weeks to 1 November, total sales (excluding fuel) were up by 9.1% (5.1% including fuel). Like-for-like sales grew by 4.3% (1.3% including fuel).
‘Group sales in the six weeks to 8 January 2011 increased by 7.6%. Total international sales over the period grew at 14.2%, with strong performances in all three regions: Asia, Europe and the US. In Asia, total sales grew by 24.2%, with good like-for-like sales growth driven by particularly encouraging performances from Thailand and China. In Europe, total sales grew by 5.6% (9.1% at constant exchange rates). Like-for-like sales growth was once again positive in every country and similar overall to our third-quarter performance.’
Third quarter trading statement for 14 weeks to 8 January 2011:
‘Best-ever Christmas, completes another strong quarter. Total sales for third quarter up 7.5% (6.0% excluding fuel). Like-for-like sales for the quarter up 5.4% (3.6% excluding fuel). Two year like-for-like sales growth of 7.4% excluding fuel. Christmas week transactions at all-time high of over 24.5m 700,000 sq ft new space added, with nearly 6,000 new jobs created.’
Quarter 3, 13 weeks to 1 January 2011:
‘Group sales +4.0%. Total UK sales +4.0%: general merchandise +4.4% (clothing +4.7%; home +2.7%), food +3.5%. Like-for-like UK sales +2.8%: general merchandise +3.8%; food +1.8%.
