Selecta has continued the expansion of its Foodie’s MicroMarket solution by introducing the unattended self-service store in the Spanish market.
Selecta’s micro market is an unattended self-service store, which offers food and drinks to consumers in workplaces and offices without retail staff present.
Two Foodie’s market concepts have been established at the headquarters of Banco Santander in Madrid’s financial district, bringing the self-service station to employees at the bank.
The expansion of Foodie’s MicroMarkets into Spain follows the introduction of the solution to the German market at the end of 2019. This latest expansion means that these markets are now available in eight European countries, including Belgium, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK.
Selecta claims that the markets “provide wider choice and more healthy and sustainable options”. Commenting on the launch, Pablo Espada, commercial manager of premium solutions for Selecta Spain said: With Foodie’s we contribute to more sustainable consumption, focusing on healthier, balanced products with environmentally-friendly packaging.
“We constantly monitor evolving consumer habits and are committed to offering the most sustainable products that are available in the market.”
Carmen Fernández, commercial and marketing director of Selecta Spain added: “We are very proud that Banco Santander has chosen our unattended self-service workplace solution, which provides sustainable and healthier refreshment alternatives, offering added value to the bank’s employees.”
Originally implemented in the US, micro markets are becoming a popular alternative or supplement to traditional vending, as the markets can offer expanded product ranges and fresh meals.
Indeed, research conducted by Automatic Merchandiser found that in the US alone, the number of active micro market locations grew from 2,642 locations in 2012 to 17,806 in 2016, an increase of 574%. This number is projected to increase to 35,000 market locations by 2022.
