SIG introduces U-shaped paper straws for aseptic carton packs

SIG has created a U-shaped paper straw for use with carton packaging as it increases efforts to use more renewable materials.

The packaging manufacturer has launched the product at Gulfood Manufacturing together with its joint venture partner SIG Combibloc Obeikan.

Paper used to produce the straw, which is available with a diameter of 4ml or 6ml, originates from FSC-certified forests and “other controlled sources”.

“SIG is determined to collaborate with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders to find new approaches to reduce single-use plastics, foster recycling and minimise waste,” said Markus Boehm, chief market officer at SIG.

The wrapper for the straw has also been redesigned to remain attached to the package and can be recycled with the carton pack.

“We are excited to launch the U-shaped paper straw during Gulfood Manufacturing,” said Abdelghany Eladib, chief operating officer, SIG Combibloc Obeikan.

“The exhibition offers an ideal platform to share our latest innovations. With plastic pollution being a major concern for businesses and consumers around the world, the food and beverage industry is under pressure to offer a viable and sustainable alternative.

“Carton packs are sustainable by nature. Our carton packs consist of 70-80% paperboard.”

In July, SIG made aseptic cartons with ASI-certified aluminium foil available to consumers for the first time in partnership with B-Better, a start-up brand from Unilever’s Future Platform.

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative standard is designed to enhance traceability and responsibility in the aluminium supply chain.
