This week’s podcast features financial results and acquisitions from some key industry players, a number of new reports and discussion of the new US tariff that will affect a number of European food and beverage products.
The US government revealed last week that it will be imposing a 25% tariff on imports of a range of food and dairy products from Europe. Products affected include Scottish and Irish whiskies, French wine and a number of other categories.
Moving onto the biggest financial story of the week, last Thursday saw the release of PepsiCo’s third-quarter results, which saw the food and beverage giant beat earnings and revenue expectations as a result of increased spending on advertising.
PepsiCo’s advertising and marketing expenses grew 12% in 2019 representing the companies push for its trademark colas, Mountain Dew and Gatorade drinks.
Meanwhile, there were a few interesting studies released last week. Firstly, a report World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that alcohol consumption in Russia decreased by 43% from 2003 to 2016, due in part to several policies implemented by the Russian Federation, including the gradual rise of excise taxes on alcohol, limited alcohol availability and the introduction of monitoring systems such as night bans.
In the packaging industry, Brand Finance has published a report that estimates a potential value loss of $430.8 billion to businesses if a plain packaging policy – similar to the plain packaging now used by tobacco products – was implemented on the beverage industry worldwide.
